Are You in Control of Your Brand, or Is the Media Controlling You?
Let’s be real—one wrong word, one unfiltered rant, or one off-the-cuff comment can turn into a PR nightmare. In today’s fast-moving digital world, where social media clips and interviews can go viral in seconds, how you present yourself matters more than ever. So, let me ask you—are you truly in control of your brand, or is the media controlling you?
If you’re not being intentional about what you say and how you say it, you’re leaving your reputation up to chance. But you don’t have to navigate this alone. It’s time to take charge of your narrative, avoid the pitfalls of oversharing, and start speaking with strategy.
Oversharing Won’t Save You—It’ll Sink You
I get it—people tell you to be authentic, to “tell your story.” But authenticity doesn’t mean a tell-all. The most powerful communicators know exactly what to share, how much to share, and when to share it. Here’s what oversharing can do:
Distract from your expertise and core message
Make you seem unfiltered or unprofessional
Give critics and haters too much room to twist your words
Think about the thought leaders and industry experts you respect. They don’t spill everything—they share with purpose. Every story, every interview, every statement is intentional and reinforces their brand. That’s the key—connecting, not confessing.
How to Take Back Control of Your Narrative
You don’t have to share your entire life story to be engaging. You do have to be intentional. Here’s how I help my clients do just that:
1. Know Your Core Message
Before any interview or public appearance, ask yourself:
What do I want people to remember about me?
What are my key talking points?
What questions could throw me off track?
When you’re clear on your message, you won’t feel the need to over-explain or fill the silence with unnecessary details.
2. Speak with Strategy, Not Emotion
I love passion—I’m all about it. But without strategy, passion can lead to unfiltered responses that may not serve you well. Train yourself to pause before answering, filter your words, and stay in control.
3. Be Engaging Without Overexplaining
If you ramble, you lose people. If you give away too much, you weaken your message. Learn to say just enough to make an impact and keep your audience wanting more.
4. Show Up with Confidence—Online and On-Air
Your words matter, but so does your presence. The way you carry yourself, your tone, and your delivery shape how people perceive you. If you show up strong and clear, you’ll be remembered for all the right reasons.
5. Keep It Real, Without Telling It All
Being real doesn’t mean being reckless. You can be transparent without giving away everything. Share what aligns with your brand and keeps you in control of your narrative.
